The Four Kingdoms
Long ago the people of the ocean lived in small nomadic colonies, drifting from area to area. They worshiped the deities Aurelia and Ostain, the great ones who kept the sea in balance. The groups were small and fragile and at war with one another. Often battles would break out over the better territories, kicking the weaker clan out and forcing them to find yet another home. Many times the weaker bunch were forced to move into waters they were unable to survive in, causing a drastic decrease in the already slow to populate species. Seeing a need for unification, the clan of the Highborn decided instead of sending off the clans that they concord they include them into their numbers. Thus the Highborns started a turning point for all the people of the sea. The Highborns took over the majority of the nomadic clans, the others who chose not to join were forced out into the chilly waters were ice was the oceans ceiling. These people were called the Haesitatus, and there home soon came to bear their name.
A Cecaelian one of the ones banished from the Highborn society was angered, why should she be banished to waters to cold to bask in the sun in? Just because she would not bow down to some power hungry mer person by the name of Mythicos. With revenge in her heart she went and beseeched the god Ostain.
Ostain was the male deity, the first Cecaelian. He was amused that this woman called upon him; so he humored her and appeared. He listened as she spun a tale of woe, how the old deities were being replace with this new idol. The old ways were slowly being forgotten and how it needed to be stopped. Then she proposed the most intriguing proposition. That he give her use of his powers; in order for her to over throw the person known as Mythicos. The idea was so preposterous, a mortal with his powers. He ought right laughed at her, but he was bored and the fights between the mortals were just getting duller with age. Perhaps this would shake things up, so out of amusement he agreed to bestow his powers to this woman.
Given a gift to use Caeruleus the woman known as Circe went into isolation to learn how to use this new gift. She could make things grow from thin air, she could heat the waters, control the tides, anything she could think of she could do. It was a thrill and the power; well the power was maddening. Ostain seeing no results sought out Circe only to be drugged and beheaded by the Sea Witch.
Ostain killed the balance of the ocean became unhinged. Water temperatures fluctuated drastically, currents became uncontrollable under water spouts popped up unannounced. Creating devastation and death in its wake. Reefs and other habitats began to die off, and the water quality began to decline. Circe took this opportunity to travel to the kingdom where Mythicos ruled. Here she promised the people a place of sanctuary. She ensured their safety as long as tribute was still paid to her. With her powers she erected a castle made of jade; along with homes for her favorite subjects. She threw Mythicos out and banished him to the oceans he had confided her to.
Mythicos saw his people being ruled by fear; the power had gone to the Sea Witches head and she was doing nothing about returning the ocean back to its original state. So he went on a journey for the knowledge on how to summon one of the great deities, much like the Sea Witch had done. It was many years before he found the knowledge he sought. When he summoned Aurelia the last of the deities she regarded him with distain and anger. She was the first merperson and her companion had been taken away from her, the creatures of the sea could suffer for their crimes. Mythicos begged for her mercy, and not to punish them for one persons revenge. He begged her to return the sea back to its normal state, he did not care for his position back or revenge...he only wanted to see that the sea and its worlds didn't come to their end. Somewhere in that Mythicos's passion reached Aurelia and she consented to help. The man did not ask for her powers like the sea witch only that she right the damage that the woman had done. She did not have the will to right the oceans herself, she had lost her companion and did not want to roam this earth any longer. So she gave Mythicos her glaive and bestowed upon him all her powers and life force.
Mythicos was given the power to use Caeruleus; and all of the knowledge on how to use it. His first order of business was to right the balance of the ocean. He spent another few years subtly restoring the balance, where ever it was disturbed. The sea witch slowly noticed her subjects paying less and less tribute and were even leaving the safety zone of her kingdom. She used her powers to make the currents worse and to bring on calamity; however the disasters never lasted long. They only lasted long enough to avoid the Sea Witches suspicions that something else was a foot.
As the Sea Witches control was waning the more frustrated she got, she took her anger out on her citizens. It was at this point that Mythicos stepped in and challenged the sea witch. The challenge was accepted and a battle of epic proportions took place out in the open sea. The Sea Witch was confident in her abilities but due to the gift of knowledge that was given to Mythicos he overpowered her. In a final clash of power the Sea Witch was defeated. The backlash of the two attacks colliding had an odd effect, seeping everything in Caeruleus, including its citizens. Mythicos stripped the Sea Witch of her powers, and once more banished her to the arctic waters.
Once more Mythicos ruled the kingdom which was now named for him. However he was the only one with the power to keep the sea in balance so he would need to travel once a month to maintain balance. During his travels he began to notice his subjects began displaying odd abilities that could be explained by nothing else but being able to use small elements of Caeruleus. It would seem that the fight between him and the sea witch in which everything got covered in Caeruleus gave certain individuals the ability to use it. HIs spare time was then taken over by people approaching him to teach them; between a kingdom and a sea to keep in balance it became hard to juggle. So he went in search for the Sea Witch, although powerless she knew how to control Caeruleus and he offered to lift her banishment in order for her to teach the control over Caeruleus. She agreed only under the condition he return her powers as well. Mythicos agreed to give her some of her powers back, not close to the strength it had been before but enough that she was satisfied. So the Sea Witch became one who people sought out for instruction in their abilities. Which gave her the place in the world that she so craved.
Mythicos eventually took on a wife and had children; threw his descendants another would appear who would be able to use Caeruleus in its full spectrum. The ones with this power were given the title The Master of the Sea. Each Master would train the new one, and so history continued. Things continued this way for centuries. Eventually as the kingdom grew in population it became more and more difficult to rule over. A person by the name of Nefar began to gather followers, and with them they rebelled breaking away from the Highborns rule. They claimed a territory further north and to the east of Mythicos. They called their new establishment Cotovatre the city of new dreams. Nefarious broke up the class system that was so strongly evident in Mythicos, he gave the woman of his species the ability to show their military prowess. Mythicos eventually fallowed suit but at a lesser extent.
With such great space between each kingdom another was required as a midway point, and so the fourth kingdom was created due to necessity. This kingdom was Erythraeus; it found its niche in trading between the other three kingdoms. Mythicos, Haesitatus, and Cotovatre, all depended on Erythraeus as a neutral territory. And so the four Kingdoms were created.
