Hazards
The ocean is as deadly as it is beautiful, and there are plenty of hazards one would have to avoid. Here are just a few listed.
Brine Pools
Are high in salt content and extremely toxic; due to the fact dipping into an underwater pool sounds like fun many of mer person have unknowingly exposed themselves to toxins in these waters. Even just staying around these pools for an extended amount of time can lead to brine poisoning.
Vents
These can be found where ever there is volcanic activity; in colder climates they are essential for the life that surrounds them. There are two type of vents, white vents which produce a lower amount of heat, and black vents. The later are considered dangerous due to the high temperatures that they admit. Another danger they pose is sporadically they can and will erupt a large spray of magma.
Red Tide
The red tide is made out of an increase of red algae, creating a thick red cloud that spells sickness or death to whomever it consumes. Fortunately they are slow moving however when it hits a large population the results can be devastating.
Water spout
Large tornadoes that form on the water's surface pose a danger to whoever is up there. If a person is caught near one they can be sucked up high in the air above the water.
Maelstroms
Maelstroms are like underwater tornadoes, sucking anything into its strong currents. A Maelstroms strength often gets stronger as the tides change and if your unlucky enough to swim through during a period when it isn't present, when the tides change the Maelstrom can catch you by surprise.
Tides
Yes tides can be a danger if one doesn't plan for them. One can often get stuck on shore or in a separate body of water if they are not paying attention.
Shore Breaks
Swimming close to the shore has its dangers as well, waves can easily pick a mer person up and crash them onto the rocks, or strand them on shore. This is especially true during storms that sometime range above the water.
Currents
Although navigable they can pose a hazard due to the fact they can take you a lot further then you meant to go, or lead you straight into a Maelstrom.
